href="http://www.ixda.org/discuss.php?post=46113">IXDA list with the "Unusable Things" thread and a recent presentation I had to give, here are a couple of examples that are good for presentations intros:

1) The Boarding Pass
This is based on a true story, from my last trip to a customer site. One needs to find the right seat on a plane. However, we need the right seat on the right plane!!! The woman sitting next to me pulled the wrong boarding pass and even the flight attendant did not figure it out why there are two passengers with the same seat. It took them a good 10 minutes to realize what's wrong. Why? Because the destination airport is tucked in the lower left corner with smaller type. On the other hand, "Boarding Pass" label is displayed in big, bold type pretending to be the most important information a user would need. You can find it here:

http://www.uie.com/articles/field_studies/

Some excerpts:
* From field studies one can learn 1) terminology and processes, 2) context, 3) similarities and differences.

1) Terminology and processes: What do users do and how do they talk about it? While users can describe a process or share terms in an interview format, watching them work points out subtleties that they are unaware of.

2) Context: What are the external forces that will impact the design? Do the user's requirements change when they are rushed or up against a deadline? People have trouble describing the context of their work, however it's easy for outsiders to observe.

3) Similarities and differences: Visiting multiple sites can allow the team to collect a rich amount of information about the commonalities that appear across environments, along with the variations that will impact design decisions (such as providing switches, options, and optional features). Just compiling a list of similarities and differences observed in 4 separate visits can really help a team focus on the critical functionality and requirements for a project.

* Users can't describe activities that they don't focus on. When you have an audience that is experienced at what they do, they often don't pay attention to the small steps involved. An outside observer will see these "unspeakeables" and can document them in ways that the participats can't.

Links

Excellent step by step tutorial for making comics from pen to ink to digital:
http://www.boltcity.com/workshop/copper_tutorial/

<img style="cursor:pointer; Interface elements must render within 0.1 seconds to suggest physicality and make users feel like a display's changes are a direct result of their actions. Slow-rendering GUI elements seem sluggish and make users feel like the computer is making things happen, not them.

You should test your mega drop-down implementation's response time on a variety of computers and browsers. Include the best-selling platform from 5 years ago, because a good number of your customers will still be using it.

Don't make response time too fast, though: the mouse should remain stationary for 0.5 seconds before you display anything that's hover-dependent, such as a mega drop-down or a tooltip. Violating this guideline will make the screen flicker insufferably when users move the mouse. Only after 0.5 seconds of resting the pointer on a navbar item can you assume that a user actually wants to see its associated drop-down.

Thus, the timing should be:

Wait 0.5 seconds.
If the pointer is still hovering over a navbar item, display its mega drop-down within 0.1 seconds.
Keep showing it until the pointer has been outside both the navbar item and the drop-down for 0.5 seconds. Then, remove it in less than 0.1 seconds.
One exception to item 3: The very best implementations can sense when a user is moving the pointer from the navbar item to a destination within the drop-down. When the pointer is on such a path, the drop-down should remain visible. This supplementary guideline addresses thediagonal problem, which happens when the path temporarily takes the pointer outside the active area. The drop-down shouldn't disappear when the user is on the way to point to something within it.

The diagonal problem:
The pointer path goes outside the area that keeps the drop-down active.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 74px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_2INZXbk4QTI/SolyOtSuRiI/AAAAAAAAAlQ/tu0B4L0II7o/s200/23.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5370949627617887778" />
In the above example, the user first pointed to the "Holidays & Parties" navbar item and now wants to select "Appetizers." Moving the pointer between these two spots makes it cross the "In Season Now" navbar item. Many users will move so fast that the pointer will exit the active area for less than 0.5 seconds. However, older or leisurely users might move the mouse so slowly that the drop-down would disappear while they're still aiming for a menu item. Very annoying.

More Links

Victor Lombardi's article on Concept Design:
http://www.digital-web.com/articles/concept_design_tools/

Good usability mantra (missing the author):
"Fewer options mean less to scan, less to understand, and less to get wrong."

Conferences for User Experience Designers

Information Architecture Summit
http://iasummit.org

Usability Professionals Association
http://www.usabilityprofessionals.org
Add Image in Photoshop (from a Forum):
"The easies way to do this is go to file > open, then find the image you want to put into your picture. Then select it and it will be opened in a new photoshop file. now press control A, on the keyboard and this will select the entire image. now on the keyboard hold control and press C. that will copy the image. now go to your picture that you have made so far. and hold control and press V(or apple V on mac), which will paste the image that you coppied. now its over the image. if you have to resize the image you pasted just press control T, which means transform, and you can move or resize the image, after that hit enter. and im guessing you can figure out how to use the eraser and stuff.

4. Jonny Holland Magazine: It is all about interaction

5. I recall reading a study (and Google is failing me here - so I hope somebody can back me up here - it was about 10/15 years ago) where they monitored completion times for a task along with user satisfaction. Allowing folk to change the colour scheme made user satisfaction improve - but made task completion time slower. I need to dig dipper into the French market, I think I only have one illustrator so far: Delphine Durand, one of my first entries in this blog.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_2INZXbk4QTI/SML8xfWV9_I/AAAAAAAAANE/5wmkEFsz_2s/s400/32.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5243030843371681778" />

More Illustrations

I continue to go through the links section from the Nut and Bee website so I will keep posting illustrations for a while (be patient, it might be a long while). Today it's S.Britt a self taught artist. Oh, and did I mention he also has a links section? His homepage has the home button as an
iglu. She blogs at Yarnivore.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_2INZXbk4QTI/SHLM6UbIq6I/AAAAAAAAAJY/PsjyJ5s2GY4/s200/9.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5220460220362828706" />

Nut and Bee
I do not remember exactly how I got to Moo.com yesterday but there is a ton to see there. So far I discovered Nut and Bee. Their illustrations are very sweet. They are almost too good if this is possible. I think if I would recommend one thing would be for them to update the site design. Their drawings are so super and the web design does not really help with the theme. But I liked the shopping cart icon. One more thing, their links page has a lot of good stuff I need to come back to... Now I know, if I have a hard time making up my mind on which image to upload, I really like the artist.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_2INZXbk4QTI/SHLPlZA5YxI/AAAAAAAAAJg/bMeuf2hrvl0/s200/10.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5220463159352582930" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_2INZXbk4QTI/SHLPuFhYygI/AAAAAAAAAJo/RYglqUB-aNA/s200/11.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5220463308738972162" />

Bunnies
Simone Lia's comics and drawings:

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_2INZXbk4QTI/SHLS2ysgn1I/AAAAAAAAAJw/LulPexyRRso/s200/13.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5220466756839055186" />

and a snapshot from her website
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_2INZXbk4QTI/SHLTF_glEyI/AAAAAAAAAJ4/2U_rzB2ddf4/s200/12.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5220467017976714018" />

Cartoons on Sticky Notes

The latest HR newsletter at my work featured a chicken drawing on what looked like PostIt notes. I looked it up and I liked what I found; the series is called Savage Chickens by Doug Savage. He also shows a behind the scene section talking about the process of making the comics.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_2INZXbk4QTI/SHA3PEtG1vI/AAAAAAAAAIw/4QhYFF-7T7E/s200/4.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5219732700222904050" />

PostIt illustrations from http://www.ulfnawrot.de/

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_2INZXbk4QTI/SHA5qyUa_gI/AAAAAAAAAI4/_jVqxn96fjk/s200/5.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5219735375347121666" />

Mark Johns'drawings
Marc Johns who I just discovered today has a lot of drawings on his site.
